This thing has been a long time coming. Who knew it would be so difficult to launch another podcast while you’re pumping out hundreds of episodes of another podcast?
As I believe I’ve mentioned in this space before, we’ve been workshopping our new podcast for over a year now, and we’ve been recording in earnest since December, with our guests wondering where in the hell this podcast is as life has gotten in the way of its forward progress. But, today, Thursday, March 21, 2024 marks the official launch of the new podcast.
The general concept is one of exploring the relationship memory and nostalgia have to how we view our youth through the lens of the films that formed who we are. It could be a film that you only saw once, but it was a seminal moment in your youth. It could be a film you watched on a loop as a child. It could be a film you loved but for whatever reason fell out of favor or became difficult to watch. Whatever the relationship with the film might have been, the one key component it has to have going for it is that our guest has not seen the film in a very long time—long enough to have rendered our guest’s recollection of the film hazy at best.
This podcast should also be far more accessible to the general podcast-listening public, as it’s not just about a long-running but extremely niche show. Rather it’s about our experiences growing up.
For each film, we sit down with our guest and do a Pre-Interview before they have rewatched the film, getting to know them and their relationship to the film. The next week, we reconvene after having watched the film and discuss the ways in which it surprised, shocked, disappointed, thrilled, and/or pleased them upon revisiting the film.
For just the first week, we’ll be dropping both the Pre-Interview and the Main Event, so you can catch the entire cycle of what we’ll be doing on the Unkind Rewind.
Despite its name, we won’t solely traffic in dreck. The movies are drawn from lists our guests provide with Sean McGrath (long-time friend, bon vivant, and co-creator of CineQuote), Adam Schwitters (my Munch My Benson co-host, who will appear as his schedule permits), and myself selecting what we expect to be the most fun to talk about, for any number of reasons.
This week, we’ll be sitting down with Kay from the F**k My Work Life Podcast—if you haven’t listened to Adam and my two appearances on their podcast, you can fix this: 1st appearance, 2nd appearance—to talk about her relationship to the 1986 Jim Henson-helmed feature, Labyrinth, starring a young Jennifer Connelly and a then 37-year-old David Bowie as the Goblin King/her love interest(?).
You can officially find the podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, IHeartRadio, Amazon/Audible, Deezer, Podcast Addict, Podchaser, and JioSaavn. You can also watch or listen to all of our episodes at our YouTube Channel, if that is your want.
The pre-interview can be watched here:
The Main Event can be watched here:
Any feedback is much appreciated and can help shape the show while its still forming.
Please rate and review the podcast on Apple Podcasts or Spotify if you listen there. It really helps, especially this early on in the life of the podcast. I’m supposed to say some nonsense like “Smash the Like and Subscribe Button,” but we all know I’m not that person, so like and subscribe if you watch on YouTube.
If you want to rewatch Labyrinth before listening to the Main Event, it might just have been posted at DailyMotion a few weeks ago by the user Razzmatazz.
And if you’re liking the podcast, please tell your friends to check us out.
